While meat consumption is one of the main drivers of environmental degradation and global heating, the demand for the humble scallop is also contributing to these problems.
A Nature report published last week, and summarised in The Guardian, Bottom trawling releases as much carbon as air travel [1], reveals that scallop dredging is one of the most destructive type of fishing on sea-floor habitats
The report mentions that the UK is among the top 10 countries with the most carbon emissions from bottom trawling.
In Stop Eating Fish [2] the point is made that there is almost no guarantee that dolphins are not impacted by fishing, even where the fish is certified Dolphin Safe.
