Over the last few years, when eating out, it is encouraging to see an increasing range and quality of vegan options on the menu.
Steak is no longer simply replaced by Cauliflower.
Baked Beans are rarely the only source of protein on offer.
Care still has to be taken when thinking about the nutritional content of plant-based alternatives; for instance, many plant-based cheeses are based on coconut oil, and contain little protein, unlike dairy-based cheese.
But there’s a lot of great vegan dishes out there waiting to be discovered.
So yesterday evening I headed out to a local pub/restaurant, The Wicked Lady (St Albans AL4 8EL) to try their vegan menu, and found plenty to choose from.
I went for the Paris Brown and Mixed Mushrooms to start, a Nourish Bowl for the main course, and a lemon and Blackcurrant Polenta Cake with soya vanilla custard for dessert.
I can certainly recommend the venue: nice atmosphere, good service, and a great cuisine.
